Elder Care in Hobe Sound FL

May is Food Allergy Action Month. This is the perfect time for you to make understanding food allergies and the role that they can play in your parent’s life part of your regular elder care efforts. Elder-Care-in-Hobe-Sound-FLFood allergies can be frightening and even deadly. Though they tend to develop in childhood, adults can and do begin to show food allergies later in life. This is why it is so important to pay close attention to your parent’s health and wellbeing, and take any new or strange symptoms that they display after eating very seriously.

Some things that you should know about food allergies include:

  • Approximately 15 million people throughout the United States have food allergies
  • The number of people who are displaying food allergies is steadily increasing but there is no clear explanation as to why this is happening
  • Every three minutes someone has to seek medical care in the emergency room due to a food allergy reaction. This accounts for more than 200,000 visits to the emergency department each year
  • Reactions to food allergies can range from very mild symptoms to anaphylaxis, which can be fatal
  • Those with asthma are at particular risk of suffering from a fatal reaction due to anaphylaxis caused by a food allergy
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, can reappear even after the initial period of symptoms has faded. This is why it is very important to pay close attention to someone who has had such a reaction to ensure that they do not continue to experience symptoms
  • Skin reactions such as hives or a red rash are very common when it comes to an allergic reaction, but are not essential. Your parent could still be suffering from anaphylaxis even if they are not showing these outward signs
  • Even the smallest amounts of the trigger food can cause a reaction, making it essential that you pay close attention to all foods that your parent eats if they have a food allergy
  • While there are many other foods that can cause allergies, 90 percent of all allergies are to the foods that are known as the Big Eight. These include fish, shellfish, tree nuts, soy, wheat, peanuts, eggs, and milk

It is vital that you know the symptoms of an allergic reaction so that you can get your parent the medical attention that they need promptly. The longer that you wait, the more likely it is that your parent will suffer from serious complications. These symptoms include:

  • Hives
  • Eczema
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Sneezing
  • Odd taste
  • Swelling of the lips, throat, or tongue
  • Feeling faint or weak
  • Passing out
  • Sense of impending doom
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Chest pain
  • Itching of the mouth or tongue

If you notice any serious symptoms such as swelling, swallowing difficulties, chest pain, or loss of consciousness, get emergency medical attention. Be sure to take note of anything that your parent has consumed in the time immediately preceding the reaction, including all foods, beverages, and medications so that the doctor can isolate the cause of the reaction if you are not already familiar with it.
